Member of EFEO, Dr. Christophe Pottier has been based in Angkor since 1992 as an architect to reopen the EFEO office in Siem Reap and to conduct some restoration projects (Terrace of Leprous King and northern staircase of Terrace of Elephant in Angkor Thom). The subject of his Ph. D. in history and archaeology submitted in 1999 at Sorbonne University (Paris III) was « Archaeological map of the Angkor area - Southern Zone ». Since then, he continued his research on ancient territorial planning and directed the French-Cambodian Archaeological Mission on the Angkor Region, a collaboration of the French Ministry of the Foreign Affairs, APSARA and EFEO.
Researches conducted in the region of Angkor since 1992 revealed hundreds of previously unknown ancient remains (i.e. temples, habitat mounds, pounds, dikes and canals) providing the opportunity to develop a new appraisal of urban growth and territorial expansion of the ancient Khmer civilization. Christophe Pottier will introduce some results of his research, presenting various types of settlement patterns, probable chronological sequences, and some significant repercussions for the understanding of Angkor urbanism.
Membre de l’EFEO, Dr. Christophe Pottier a été chargé depuis 1992 de la réimplantation du centre de l’EFEO à Siem Reap et de travaux de restauration (Terrasse du Roi Lépreux et perron nord de la Terrasse des Eléphants à Angkor Thom). Le sujet de son doctorat soutenu en 1999 à l’Université de la Sorbonne Nouvelle (Paris III) était : « Carte archéologique de la région d’Angkor - Zone Sud ». Depuis, il a poursuivit ses recherches l’aménagement du territoire angkorien et dirige la mission archéologique Franco-Cambodgienne sur la région d’Angkor, collaboration du ministère Français des Affaires Etrangères, d’APSARA et de l’EFEO.
Les recherches entreprises dans la région d’Angkor depuis 1992 ont mis en évidence l’existence de centaines de sites archéologiques inédits (temples, zone d’habitat, bassins, digues et canaux), fournissant l’occasion de développer une nouvelle compréhension de la croissance “urbaine” et de l’expansion territoriale de la civilisation du Cambodge ancien. Christophe Pottier présentera quelques résultats de ses recherches, donnant plusieurs exemples concernant divers types de structures et d’établissements anciens, leurs séquences chronologiques probables, et quelques répercussions significatives pour la compréhension du fait urbain à Angkor.
