Ernelle Berliet is actually completing
her Ph.D at Lumière University-Lyon 2, in collaboration with Sorbonne Nouvelle
University-Paris 3, about historical geography and urbanisation in ancient
Burma. She completes a work of prospection on the ground since 2001. She started
research in archaeology on the old cities of Burma since 1998 and she is a
member of the French archaeological mission in Bangladesh for 3 years.
Emergence of cities and states stand as one of the most complex issue for
the understanding of early historical periods in Southeast Asia. Landuse,
urbanisation process and their evolution through time has been rarely studied,
especially in Burma. Ernelle Berliet is studying that particular subject, based
on surveys she is conducting since 2001 on the archaeological sites located in
plain area. She will introduce the main stages of urban evolution in ancient
Burma, and will present several cases of ancient cities founded by different
populations (Pyu, Môn and Burmese) at various periods of their history.
Ernelle Berliet achève un doctorat à l’Université Lumière-Lyon II, en
collaboration avec l’Université Sorbonne Nouvelle-Paris III, qui porte sur la
géographie historique et l’urbanisation dans l’ancienne Birmanie. Elle mène des
recherches dans ce domaine depuis 1998 et participe également à la mission
française de coopération archéologique au Bangladesh depuis 3 ans.
L’émergence des cités et des états figure parmi les questions les plus
complexes que pose le début des périodes historiques en Asie du Sud-Est. L’occupation
du territoire, dont les phénomènes d’urbanisation font partie, et son évolution
à travers les époques n’ont été que rarement abordées, particulièrement en
Birmanie, alors même qu’elles fournissent une clé privilégiée à la
compréhension du développement des premiers établissements humains. Ernelle
Berliet étudie particulièrement ce sujet en se basant sur le travail de
prospections qu’elle mène depuis 2001 sur l’ensemble des sites archéologiques
établis en secteurs de plaine. Elle développera les grandes lignes de
l’évolution urbaine en présentant plusieurs villes fondées dans ce pays par
différentes populations (les Pyu, les Môn et les Birmans) à différentes époques
de leur histoire.
