The Nature of Angkor

Exhibition by Sasha Constable

Linocut Prints, Drawings and Photographs

November 1st - 30th 2003, Grand Hotel d'Angkor Siem Reap Cambodia

British Artist Sasha Constable first came to Angkor in 2000, drawn to the temples from her professional interest as a sculptor specialising in stone carving. For six months, she served as artist in residence for the World Monuments Fund (WMF) - a New York based non profit organisation which works worldwide to preserve unique historical sites. Since 1992, the WMF has worked in the Angkor park at Preah Khan temple 'City of the Sacred Sword' which was built in 1192 by Jayavarman VII as a Buddhist monastery and centre for learning. Whilst working as artist in residence, Sasha produced a series of linocut prints based predominantly on images from Preah Khan temple. Sasha then worked for a further year as WMF's design consultant helping to update the Preah Khan visitor's centre.

During three years of living and working in Angkor / Siem Reap, Sasha has become increasingly fascinated and inspired by the local environment and the symbiotic relationship of nature and the temples. The giant trees and living jungle which slowly enter and engulf the ancient structures and temples. Trees and stone. Ancient cultural heritage and nature's power to reclaim the land. Temples slowly disappearing into the jungle. History and nature blending as one.

AND just to the south of Angkor lies the unique and amazing Tonle Sap Great Lake. Thousands of hectares of forests are flooded annually with water depths up to 8 meters among the trees. This unique annual cycle provides a bounty of fish, water and other resources, which is the principal reason for Angkor's positioning near the Great Lake. Water and fish, trees and temples, the amazing human achievement called Angkor.

This exhibition is a celebration of Nature, a celebration of the unique Environment of Angkor and a celebration of Life itself. Art work includes hand printed linocuts, drawings and photographs. Prints and postcards from a previous show are also available - please see portfolio.
