We were friends sharing a love of music and playing together in the ‘Scurvy Dogs’. Steve’s friendship meant he would go the extra mile if needed. We met in early 1996 when working together on the challenges of child protection. At the time I was managing World Visions Bamboo Shoot Street Children’s centre. Steve undertook research on the commercial sexual exploitation of children which had taken off as Cambodia opened up to cross border trade. His work on social justice concerns was of high standard. Steve’s strong stand on quality outcomes and influence of decisions makers helped make a lasting difference in the lives of many. I recall his passion for social justice, faith that respected the dignity of all and willingness to take on risk. We worked to set up the Stueng Meanchey project supporting communities to address child labour at the rubbish dump. Innovative and influential engagement with the challenge of urban poverty. He tested models, challenging poor practice where this created dependence or marketed misery for gain. He partnered with others for long lasting change.
