Lundi 17 février / Monday February 17 You are cordially invited to attend the following informal presentation: Investigating the human past using Medical High Technology: SKELETONS FROM PREI KHMENG Prof. Rethy K Chhem Associate Professor, Musculoskeletal Radiologist and Medical Educator UNIVERSITY OF SINGAPORE The purpose of this presentation is to discuss the roles of Medical High Technology in the investigation of two 2000 years-old skeletons (One adult/one child) recovered from the Pre-Angkor archaeological site of Prei-Khmeng Siem Reap. Multidetector Computed Tomography was carried out to evaluate the entire skeleton in their soil-matrix. The study was done to assess the morphology of the skeleton and also to detect possible diseases of the bones. Physical anthropology was performed to evaluate the age of the skeleton at death, and also to identify the gender of the adult skeleton. The investigation was completed by a DNA study of both bones and teeth from these skeletons. This project was conducted by the Osteoarchaeology Research Group-Singapore, in collaboration with APSARA and the Ecole Française d'Extrême-Orient. Prof. Rethy K Chhem taught Radiology at the University of Sherbrooke and McGill (Canada), then at National University of Singapore (NUS). He is the founding Chairman of the Osteoarchaeology Research Group-NUS. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Center for Khmer Studies and The Angkor Children Hospital, Siem Reap. He travels extensively and teaches in Asia, Europe and the Americas. He conducts research on Ultrasound of musculoskeletal pathologies and Computed Tomography of ancient skeletons. He had published 80 scientific papers and edited 3 books, in French and English. The presentation will take place February 17, at 6:30 pm in the EFEO library. Presentation will be in French, with English translation Ecole Française d'Extrême-Orient (EFEO) Siem Reap Phum Beng Don Pa, Khum Slâ Kram Tel: (885) (16) 635 037 / (63) 964 630 Tel/Fax: (855) (63) 964 226 Email: efeo.angkor@camintel.com / efeo.rep.bib@camintel.com EFEO Web Site: www.efeo.fr
