Lundi 3 Mars/ Monday March 3rd, 2003 You are cordially invited to attend the following informal presentation: Mon-khmer Languages, Myths and Reality Prof. Gérard DIFFLOTH Ethnolinguist, EFEO, Siem Reap Le terme Môn-Khmer est d’usage courant, mais son sens exact n’est pas toujours connu. The term Mon-Khmer is widely used, but often without a clear notion of what it precisely refers to. From the point of view of historical linguistics, Mon-Khmer is a family of related languages which includes, besides Khmer and Mon, about 120 languages ranging from Assam to Yunnan, and all the way South to Malaysia. They form 12 historical branches, 4 of which are represented in Cambodia. Many examples will be provided, and implications for the proto-history of the region will be suggested. Professor G. Diffloth is one of the members of the EFEO in Siem Reap. PhD in linguistics from UCLA (1968), he has taught for many years at the University of Chicago and Cornell University. He is currently writing an “Introduction to Comparative Mon-Khmer” and compiling an Etymological Dictionary of Mon-Khmer languages. The presentation will take place March 3rd, at 6:30 pm in the EFEO library. Presentation will be in English. FREE CHOAM NIMOL It's not easy if you don't have citizenship in the States. Even if you've been living there for years. And many Cambodians, with linguistic barriers, find it difficult to tackle the legal requirements. The government hasn't been much help. First they're deporting Cambodians en masse to Cambodia that have committed small felonies. Now Choam Nimol from the genre blending band Dengue Fever has been detained by La Migra in what should have been a routine road check. Lighten up guys, would you? Whatever happened to innocent until proven guilty? From the Dengue Fever News Mailing List: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/denguefevernews We want to apologize and let everyone know why we couldn't make the Feb 7th and 8th Jonathan Richman shows. On the drive back from San Diego, we were stopped at the INS checkpoint in San Clemente. Nimol was taken into custody and has been in jail ever since. We have an immigration lawyer who is doing his best on the case. We are tentatively planning a benefit show in Los Angeles on March 2nd to help defray the cost of her legal fees. We will keep you posted as the acts become confirmed. Thanks for your support Dengue Fever

Lundi 17 février / Monday February 17 You are cordially invited to attend the following informal presentation: Investigating the human past using Medical High Technology: SKELETONS FROM PREI KHMENG Prof. Rethy K Chhem Associate Professor, Musculoskeletal Radiologist and Medical Educator UNIVERSITY OF SINGAPORE The purpose of this presentation is to discuss the roles of Medical High Technology in the investigation of two 2000 years-old skeletons (One adult/one child) recovered from the Pre-Angkor archaeological site of Prei-Khmeng Siem Reap. Multidetector Computed Tomography was carried out to evaluate the entire skeleton in their soil-matrix. The study was done to assess the morphology of the skeleton and also to detect possible diseases of the bones. Physical anthropology was performed to evaluate the age of the skeleton at death, and also to identify the gender of the adult skeleton. The investigation was completed by a DNA study of both bones and teeth from these skeletons. This project was conducted by the Osteoarchaeology Research Group-Singapore, in collaboration with APSARA and the Ecole Française d'Extrême-Orient. Prof. Rethy K Chhem taught Radiology at the University of Sherbrooke and McGill (Canada), then at National University of Singapore (NUS). He is the founding Chairman of the Osteoarchaeology Research Group-NUS. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Center for Khmer Studies and The Angkor Children Hospital, Siem Reap. He travels extensively and teaches in Asia, Europe and the Americas. He conducts research on Ultrasound of musculoskeletal pathologies and Computed Tomography of ancient skeletons. He had published 80 scientific papers and edited 3 books, in French and English. The presentation will take place February 17, at 6:30 pm in the EFEO library. Presentation will be in French, with English translation Ecole Française d'Extrême-Orient (EFEO) Siem Reap Phum Beng Don Pa, Khum Slâ Kram Tel: (885) (16) 635 037 / (63) 964 630 Tel/Fax: (855) (63) 964 226 Email: efeo.angkor@camintel.com / efeo.rep.bib@camintel.com EFEO Web Site: www.efeo.fr
