Bangkok

Bangkok Visa expiry is as good a reason as any to take a few days out to stock up on bootlegged music and DVDs. On top of that got some Khmer Language books. Realized I haven't been outside of Cambodia in about a year. Funny how time and work creep up on you. Starbucks is 'glocalizing' with green tea frappuchino. English is ubiquitous, though not perfect. I'm not sure the guy window shopping with his girfriend at Siam Center wearing the 'everlasting cocksucker' t-shirt quite grasps the nuances of his apparel. A more ominous garment is the appearance of face masks among the wary few who are worried about the SARS virus. Went to Khao San Road to get the cheap tourist bus, but I'm gonna try to hop off at Poipet and see if I can shave some dollars and time off my travel.(Following the sage advice of Gordon Sharpless) I should learn some basic Thai too, just to navigate next time I'm here.

Koh Ker

Blipped out to Koh Ker a little over a week ago. Probably the most off-road driving I've done yet - only wiped out four times. The road was dusty but I have little doubt it was far more comfortable by bike than by car. Set out from "Mysteries of Angkor" hotel at Siem Reap in the early AM, reached the temple by nightfall. Met up with some folks doing a temple survey (from EFEO) along the way, who joined up with our group. Covered in dust and dirt by evening then so an improvised shower by a local stream was a real treat. In the morning, Koh Ker itself was stunning, I will have to go back for a longer look. A grim reminder of why Koh Ker has been off the main route was provided by the demining signs that were present nearby. There are some other temples close by that should be viewable once some more clearance has been done. Andy Brouwer has some extensive pictures and notes on his own travel to Ko Ker if you want to see more. Stay tuned for pix.

Tonle Sap Style

Out to Prek Toal bird sanctuary with Osmose last week. In the dry season birds come from all over the Tonle Sap to catch fish and breed. On the way back, stopped at Gecko Centre and found the latest in fashion nonprofit wear - some new t-shirt designs by Sasha Constable. Sash is currently in Latin America, knocking back tequila and garnering ideas for her next exhibition.
