Capital, Capitol: Phnom Penh Siem Reap

Capital, Capitol. Down in Phnom Penh, catching up with friends. Printing a few jinja.apsara.org T-shirts. Crashed a few nights at the famed Capitol Guest house, immortalized in "Girls, Guns and Ganja - Off the Rails in Phnom Penh" Rumor has it the author has upset so many people its doubtful he'll show up in Phnom Penh again. Saw a fun Yike show (a form of Cambodian Opera) at Friends restaurant Monday, put on by the Cambodian Masters group. Despite rain and the awning falling down in a gust of wind, the kids soldiered on. Bravo! It's amusing and fun to see the children playing adult roles, and the teacher they've recruited is one of the leading experts in the field. Catching up on media diet...The new Beck CD just doesn't do it for me. Enjoyed a screening of Gurinder Chadha's 'Bend it like Beckham' - a bit of a message flick but entertaining, great music! Much less strident than her earlier Bhaji at the Beach. Also new comic strip in Khmer and English, if you're game.

Retracing Steps

Temples by air It seems in life we are sometimes bound to often retrace our steps. In this case I don't mind too much: I'd recently gone by dirtbike to Koh Ker, and subsequently Preah Vihear. I did both in a day by helicopter, which was great fun. I'm used to thinking in terms of how difficult the road is, or which monument is close to another. Flying provides another topology entirely. Preah Vihear by air Koh Ker by air Some of the small 'linga' monuments in the vicinity of Koh Ker. This was a first for me, some are quite intact after years of complete neglect! (More pictures to follow!)

SARS overrated

SARS overrated Saucy Beige notes SARS is overrated, in the overall health scheme of things. http://www.saucybeige.com/archives/050103_sars_overrated.html Lots of people dying of malaria and extremely preventable things, like worms and diarrhea. Health is a global issue.
