Artist Sopheap Pich is in China and trying out some new techniques.

Dear Friends,

My show in Kunming is up now and I have a few more days of stay here
before going back to Phnom Penh. It’s been a good experience being
here as I feel anonymous because of my color, yet not knowing how to
speak Chinese kept me from stress and informations. I feel more at
home here because of that anonymity.

I made some small progress with the work. I think I was very tired
from the Bangkok show and didn’t make as many work as I should have.
but I managed to make two sculptures, three large drawings and one
painting – just to do something different. Also, the problems with
shipping the work back limited me from doing large work. Instead I
opted to make wall – hung pieces.

I painted one sculpture in glow in the dark paint, just to see what
happens.. I think it came out quite well. I had to build a room for
it, which took some work as well.

So here are the sculptures, and hope this finds you well. Happy new Year.

Pigs & Pregnancy:

Year of the Golden Pig @ Java

Sasha Constable and Vincent Brustet put on a fun show:

Vincent was interested in the process of consumption of pigs, how our daily life is so close to their lives and deaths.

Is there a pig heaven? This (below) kind resembles pig limbo. (Pigs in Space?)

Sash’s multimedia offerings were inspired by the high birth rate in this extremely auspicious year. See for yourself:

All told, good to see some familiar faces and some new art.

The Annual Discussion

Welcome to another ‘Victory Against the Genocidal Regime’ day. (Formerly the ‘Day of Hate’.)
January 7 is marked on local calendars as a day of celebration for the liberation of (much) of Cambodia from ‘Pol Pot’. I have respect for soldiers of any nationality who lost their lives fighting the Khmer Rouge.

There is another issue however, and that is of the Vietnamese military’s continued presence in Cambodia for roughly a decade. Was it a war of occupation? Was it exploitative? Many Cambodians say yes, particularly overseas Khmers. Others disagree.

This is hotly debated via newspapers, internet message boards, email lists and weblogs. I don’t propose any answer or final point of view.

I do think however that to accurately depict history, we need more Khmer historians. It would be great to see more documentation, particularly personal memoirs, from soldiers and civilians of all sides. History books about Cambodia are largely written in French and English, by foreign scholars.

If we intend to analyze events carefully and clearly, we are going to need to continue building schools and universities that produce scholars that think independently, and are willing to speak their minds – even if what they say is controversial.
