Études universitaires à Lyon puis à Paris. Pensionnaire à l¹Institut français de Pondichéry (section indologique) de 1959 à 1961. Membre de l¹Ecole française d¹Extrême-Orient au Cambodge de 1961 à 1970 puis à Paris jusqu¹en 1973. Chargé d¹un cours de l¹histoire de l¹Asie à la faculté des lettres de Phnom Penh, puis d¹un cours d¹épigraphie et d¹histoire du pays khmer à la faculté d¹Archéologie. Chargé de conférences à l¹Ecole pratique des Hautes Études (EPHE) de 1964 à 1973. Directeur d¹Études à l¹EPHE (IVe section : Sciences historiques et philologiques) depuis 1973. Conseiller spécial du Directeur général de l¹UNESCO pour Angkor et le Cambodge depuis 1993. Auteur de très nombreux articles sur l¹épigraphie et l¹histoire du Cambodge et d¹ouvrages de référence tels que Angkor (Bordas 1990), Angkor résidence des dieux (Olizane 1997), Angkor cité khmère (River books 2000).
À l¹occasion de son passage à Siem Reap, le Professeur Claude JACQUES présentera la richesse et la complexité des sources épigraphiques sur le Cambodge ancien à partir de l¹exemple de la célèbre stèle du temple de Prah Khan d¹Angkor. Cette stèle est particulièrement riche d¹informations détaillées sur le fonctionnement et l¹organisation d¹une grande fondation religieuse durant le règne de Jayavarman VII.
Claude Jacques is a French epigraphist and historian and a specialist of ancient Khmer culture. After completing his Ph.D. in Lyon and Paris, he has been a fellow at the French Institute of Indology in Pondichéry (India 1959-61), then researcher at EFEO in Cambodia and professor of epigraphy and art history at Phnom Penh University from 1961 to 1970. In 1973 he was elected to a Chair of epigraphy at the Ecole pratique des Hautes Etudes (EPHE, France), IVth section. Since 1993, he works as special adviser to the General Director of UNESCO for Angkor and Cambodia. He is also the author of numerous articles and of renowned books: Angkor (Bordas 1990), Angkor city and sanctuaries (Olizane 1997), Angkor khmer city (River books 1999).
On the occasion of his visit to Siem Reap, Professor Claude JACQUES will present the wealth and complexity of the inscriptions of ancient Cambodia, using as an example the famous stele of the Prah Khan temple in Angkor. This long inscription is exceptionally rich in details, and is extremely informative for a better understanding of the workings of a great religious foundation under King Jayavarman VII.
