Do It Yourself

Cambodia kind of skipped the punk rock era due to armed conflict going on at the time. There are punk songs about Cambodia, but authentic Khmer Punk Rock remains to be seen.
As with hip-hop culture, Punk is more than a musical style, it has its own ethos and values, mainly related to utilitarianism and individuality.
One might not necessarily associate punk rock with Cambodian comic books, but they certainly qualify as (“DIY”) publishing. When your only choice is to ‘do it yourself’, the idea as an aesthetic strategy loses much of its allure. I am in awe of book people in Cambodia. No one’s getting rich in the Khmer literary world. Writers, editors, illustrators and publishers do what they do because they’re committed.
