    Hi Jinja,

    I did not know you read German. Thanks for the link to the translation tool, I gives a whole new dimension to the article.

    Now it seems the ZEIT has a correspondent in Phnom Penh and regularly publishes articles about Cambodia.

    I was delighted to see Tharum getting the attention he deserves and hope future articles will not describe Cambodia as nothing but Pol POt’s legacy.

    My grandfather is of German origin, and I studied the language in high school for three years. (I have forgotten it all!) I did attempt to practice it with the members of German Apsara Conservation Project, with much amusement on their part.

    I would like to visit Deutschland someday for a few months, and try to remember my buried linguistic knowledge. I also have some distant relatives there.

    During the socialist era, Humboldt University in East Berlin offered courses in Khmer and served as a center for Cambodia research in the Eastern Bloc. It would be interesting to visit and see what teachers and materials remain in the present day.

    Some great pictures and stories on your blog, Stefan! Keep up the good work! You show a lot of Cambodia that is rarely seen by us ‘barangs’.

    Hi Jinja,

    funny you had German in school and that you have inside knowledge of East Berlin academia. I am from Potsdam, also in the east and next to Berlin, and have gotten my fair share of the socialist era. Would be interesting indeed to know the status of Khmer studies at Humboldt. My guess is that they still maintain it.

    Thanks for kind words also. I am in Canada till the end of the year and miss Cambodia a lot, so will check your blog to know whats going on. Hope to be back in Cambodia in early 2007 and would be delighted to meet you in person one day.
