Vann Molyvann Conference, French Cultural Centre, Sept 04

You may not speak Khmer. You may not know much about architecture, or urban planning.

PP heyday

But this is a rare chance to see a living legend talk about the past, present and future of Phnom Penh. It’s not just for Phnompenhois , the larger issues affect the whole country. There were so many questions and interest last time, we’re lucky to have an encore, in colloquial Khmer this time.

Look, just go, OK? You’ll be glad you did.

Waterspout

Waterspout

This picture could be yours – for 1000 riel, down at the waterfront in Phnom Penh.
Some are saying this cloud resembles a seated Buddha.

Waterspout 02

One Khmer friend took a look at the above and dismissed it as ‘photoshop’.

Waterspout 01

Wish I could have seen it.

A foreign friend who’s a Buddhist scholar said he was interested in getting opinions on the event. He was sure people would ascribe some significance to it, and wanted to know what kind.
“Because it’s Cambodia, right?” I replied.
“No, you’ll get that in pretty much any country.”

Postscript November 30: Someone seems to have captured it on video!

Writer, weblogger, and former VSO volunteer Angie Manzano has left Cambodia, following a persistent series of explicit posts and threats featured on website Khmer440.com.

A series of message board postings copied prior writings and attributed false statements to ‘Cambochica’ and ‘Angie Manzano’ over a series of several months.
They culminated in a poll whether she should be ‘burnt at the stake’.

Forum administrator and former VSO volunteer Darren Conquest/’Lord Playboy’ has yet to make a public statement regarding his site’s legal culpability for sexual harassment, plagiarism and identity theft.

Postscript, August 29 2006: “Cambodia Uncovered”, or covered up?

In lieu of defending their actions, Khmer440.com has instead quietly deleted the “Burnt at the Stake” poll, and is also now modifying prior forum posts. (If anyone from the news media wants an archived copy, just email me.)
They likely have requested Google delete it (yes, it can be done), and opted for the Internet Archive not to archive their site’s recent listings.

There is still plenty of threatening language and misrepresentation at

But if you want to see, you’d better hurry. It’s all disappearing fast. Like the site’s credibility.

Anyone see the movie ‘Brazil‘? Is this cosmetic surgery? Oh wait, it’s a facial wrap.
Love those street signs.
